Remote echo mode

While most users prefer to test using a public echo server, in some circumstances it may be preferable or necessary to set up a local echo server, for example on an internal network not connected to the Internet, or when operating behind a firewall which blocks access to public echo servers.

The Connection/Echo menu item places Speak Freely in Remote Echo mode. Any packets arriving from hosts connected to a machine running in this mode are immediately echoed back to the originator. Note that unlike the public echo servers, which delay autio 10 seconds before returning it, Remote Echo mode sends the audio back immediately. Consequently, if the machine connected to the host in Remote Echo mode has half-duplex audio hardware, the echoed audio will not play, since it will arrive while the machine is still transmitting.
